Panakala Narasimha Swamy Temple is located at Mangalagiri, 13 km southeast of Vijayawada, in Guntur District in Andhra Pradesh. The temple is famous for panakam offering and a miracle associated with the drink.
The murti of Narasimha Avatar of Bhagavan Srihari Vishnu worshipped at the Panakala Narasimha Swamy temple is unique. Only face with mouth open of Narasimha is worshipped in the sanctum sanctorum. The face is covered with gold kavacha.
Devotees offer panakam made at the madapalli of the temple to the deity. Panakam cooling drink made using water, lemon juice, jaggery, ginger powder, cardamom powder and black pepper. It is an important offering to Narasimha and it is believed that it is offered to cool him down and keep his unimaginable anger in control.
The priests pour the panakam provided by devotees in the mouth of the murti and a gurgling sound is heard. When the sound stops, the priest stop pouring the panakam and the rest is given back to the devotee as Prasad. The miracle is that the quantity returned back varies from devotee to devotee. There is also no outlet for the panakam to drain out.
