Ilayamma Theyyam and Moothamma Theyyam which are performed rarely in temples and kavu of Kannur and Kasargod districts of Kerala are a manifestation of diseases especially infectious diseases. There are two types of gods and goddesses one which spread diseases and the other which cures diseases. Ilayamma Theyyam – Moothamma Theyyam spreads diseases. Puthiya Bhagavathy is Goddess who cures the diseases spread by Ilayamma Theyyam and Moothamma Theyyam.
Ilayamma Theyyam and Moothamma Theyyam are together known as Cheerambumaru.
Ilayamma Theyyam and Moothamma Theyyam are performed at Kavinmoola Cherupazhassi Puthiyakavu temple near Mayyil (കാവിൻമൂല ചെറുപഴശ്ശി പുതിയ ഭഗവതി കാവ് കളിയാട്ടം).

രോഗങ്ങള്ക്ക് ദേവതാസങ്കല്പം ചെയ്യുന്ന പതിവ് പണ്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. തെയ്യാട്ടത്തില്‍ രോഗദേവതകളെ കാണാം. ഇവരില്‍ രോഗം വിതയ്ക്കുന്നവരെന്നും രോഗശമനം വരുത്തുന്നവരെന്നും രണ്ടുതരമുണ്ട്. ചീറുമ്പമാര്‍ (മൂത്തഭഗവതി, ഇളയഭഗവതി), ദണ്ഡദേവന്‍, കണ്ഠാകര്ണനന്‍, വസൂരിമാല എന്നിവ രോഗമുണ്ടാക്കുന്നവരാണ്. പുതിയഭഗവതി അത്തരം രോഗങ്ങളെ മാറ്റുന്ന ദേവതയാണെന്നാണ് സങ്കല്പം. തൂവക്കാളി, തൂവക്കാരന്‍, മാരി തുടങ്ങി വേറെയും രോഗദേവതകളുണ്ട്.
