Pilleronam meaning Onam of children is held on the Thiruvonam nakshatra day in Karkidaka Masam. This is 28 days before the original Thiruvonam festival in Chinga Masam. Pilleronam 2024 date is August 19.
Pilleronam is celebrated with wearing new clothes, pookalam and elaborate sadya.
In olden days, the preparation for onam began with Pilleronam.
As per some belief, pilleronam is dedicated to the Vamana Avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu. It must be noted that Thiruvonam in Chingam is dedicated to the visit of Mahabali to see his subjects. Mahabali was pushed down to the netherworld by Vamana.
A small pookalam is made in front of houses in traditional Hindu homes. Unniyappam, a sweet delicacy, is prepared on the day.
In ancient times, the onam festival in Thrikkakara Vamana temple used to begin on the Thiruvonam nakshatra day in Karkidakam month and conclude after 28 days on Thiruvonam nakshatra in Chinga Masam.
It is said that in ancient times Karkidakam was a month of struggle and poverty due to heavy rains. The special food prepared on the Thiruvonam day in Karkidakam used to be a much awaited event.

- ചിലയിടങ്ങളിൽ കുട്ടികളെല്ലാം ഒത്തു ചേർന്ന് കൈകളിൽ മൈലാഞ്ചി അണിയുന്ന പതിവും ഉണ്ട്.
- വാമന പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുള്ള തൃക്കാക്കര ക്ഷേത്രത്തില‌െ ഓണാഘോഷങ്ങൾ കർക്കടകത്തിലെ തിരുവോണത്തിനു തുടങ്ങി 28 ദിവസമായിരുന്നു. ഇവിടെ ക്ഷേത്രോൽസവത്തിൽ പങ്കുകൊള്ളാത്തവർ പിന്നീടു വരുന്ന അത്തം മുതല്‍ പത്തു ദിവസം തൃക്കാക്കരയപ്പനെ വച്ച് ആഘോഷം നടത്തണമെന്നായിരുന്നു രാജാവായിരുന്ന പെരുമാളുടെ കൽപന. തൃക്കാക്കരയപ്പന്റെ തിരുനാളായി തിരുവോണം കൊണ്ടാടാനും ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
