The history of Pathirikkunnath Mana temple in Kerala – famous for Naga (naga or serpent) worship. The story of the reason for serpent worship here is given below in Malayalam too.
In Kerala, very few orthodox Namboodiri families are ordained to perform Naga Aradhana (serpent worship). Pathiri Kunnath Mana is one among such snake families. This family is also locally known as Kulappuratthu mana. The tradition of serpent worship dates back approximately a few hundred years.
The story goes like this, Long ago when the oldest couple in the family was unable to conceive, they were concerned that the lineage would be disrupted. They fell into a state of despair. Both the husband and wife prayed to Ayyappa (who was their family deity) requesting him to find a solution to their condition. Dharma Shasta (Ayyappa) advised the couple to worship Shiva of the Vadakkunnathan temple in Thrissur.
Due to the couple's very sincere invocation, Shiva was pleased and Vasuki the serpent appeared and blessed and said he would be born to them as their child. Very soon the lady conceived and she gave birth to a boy along with a baby serpent. Both the serpent and the boy were raised together. The snake followed the boy everywhere.
However, relatives and the villagers were intimidated by the serpent’s presence. They mentioned to the couple that they were terrified by the serpent’s presence. The couple shared this concern with the serpent and he replied. He replied that he would disappear on one condition that his mother would provide Nivedyam for him every day and he also mentioned that he would always be present whenever he was called for. Since then the family began to worship the serpent and has been a center for those who are beseeched by the Sarpa Dosha or the curse of the serpents. Having said so the serpent disappeared behind a stone in a corner of a raised hall at the northern part of the house. This is the shrine where Naga Raja is worshipped.
വിവിധങ്ങളായ നാഗാരാധനകൾക്ക് ആചാര്യസ്ഥാനം വഹിക്കുവാൻ പാരമ്പര്യമായി അവകാശം സിദ്ധിച്ച വളരെ കുറച്ച് നമ്പൂതിരി ഗൃഹങ്ങളെ കേരളത്തിലുള്ളൂ, അത്തരം നാഗാരാധന കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിൽ പ്രമുഖ സ്ഥാനം വഹിക്കുന്ന ഇല്ലം ആണ് പാലക്കാട്‌ ജില്ലയിൽ പഴയ വള്ളുവനാട് ദേശത്ത് ഷൊർണൂരിനും ചെർപ്പുളശ്ശേരിക്കും ഇടയിൽ മുണ്ടക്കോട്ടുകുർശ്ശി എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന പാതിരിക്കുന്നത്ത് മന, കുളപ്പുറത്ത് മന എന്ന പേരിലും ഈ ഇല്ലം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്.
ഏതാണ്ട് ആയിരത്തിനാനൂറിലധികം വർഷങ്ങളുടെ പഴക്കം ഈ ഇല്ലത്തെ സർപ്പ പാരമ്പര്യത്തിന് കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഒരിക്കൽ ഇല്ലത്ത് ഒരു ദമ്പതികുടുംബത്തിന് വിവാഹം കഴിഞ്ഞ് വളരെ കാലം ആയിട്ടും സന്താന ഭാഗ്യം ഉണ്ടായില്ല, ഇത് കൊണ്ട് അവർ വളരെ വ്യസനത്തിൽ ആയിരുന്നു. തങ്ങളുടെ ഇല്ലം സന്തതി ഇല്ലാതെ അന്യം നിന്ന് പോകുമോ എന്ന ഭയം അവർക്ക് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു, ഇല്ലത്തെ വിപ്രൻ തന്റെ ഗ്രാമദേവത ആയ അയ്യപ്പനെ ഭജിച്ചു തന്റെ വിഷമം മാറ്റി തരുവാൻ പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചു.
ശ്രീ വടക്കുന്നാഥനെ ഭജിക്കുവാനും അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് സങ്കടം പറയുവാനും ശ്രീ ധർമശാസ്താവ് നമ്പൂതിരി യോട് അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു അങ്ങനെ വിപ്രൻ തൃശിവപേരൂർ പോയി വടക്കുന്നാഥനെ ഭജന മിരിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ ഭജനയിൽ സംപ്രീതനായ ഭഗവാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മുൻപിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു ഇല്ലത്തേക്ക് മടങ്ങിപോയ്ക്കൊള്ളാൻ പറഞ്ഞു, ഇല്ലത്തേക്ക് മടങ്ങി എത്തിയ നമ്പൂതിരി തന്റെ അന്തർജനത്തോട് വിവരങ്ങൾ പറഞ്ഞു, അങ്ങനെ പ്രാർത്ഥനയും വിഷമങ്ങളുമായി ദിനങ്ങൾ കടന്നുപോയി, ഒടുവിൽ അന്തർജ്ജനം ഗർഭിണി ആയി, ഗർഭകാലം പൂർണമായി അന്തർജ്ജനം ഒരു ഉണ്ണിയെയും ഒരു നാഗത്തിനെയും പ്രസവിച്ചു, രണ്ടാളും ഇല്ലത്തിനകത്ത് വളർന്നു വന്നു , നാഗം തന്റെ കൂടപിറപ്പായ ഉണ്ണിയുടെ ഒപ്പം തന്നെ എപ്പോഴുo ഇല്ലത്തിനകത്ത് കാണപ്പെട്ടു.
ഇല്ലത്ത് വരുന്ന ബന്ധുജനങ്ങൾക്കും മറ്റുള്ളവർക്കും ഇത് കണ്ട് ഇല്ലത്തേക്ക് വരാൻ വരാൻ വരാൻ ഭയം ആയി ഒടുവിൽ അമ്മയും അച്ഛനും നാഗത്തിനോട് "നിന്നെ ഇങ്ങനെ എപ്പോഴും അകത്തു കൂടി കണ്ടാൽ ആൾക്കാർ ആരും ഇങ്ങോട്ട് വരാതാവും എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു, അച്ഛൻ പറഞ്ഞത് ഒരു ശാസനയുടെ സ്വരത്തിൽ ആണെങ്കിലും അമ്മ പറഞ്ഞത് നാഗത്തിന് വളരെ വിഷമം ആയി, എങ്കിലും ഇനി എന്നെ അകത്തു കാണില്ല എന്നും, ഇല്ലത്തെ അമ്മമാരുടെ നിവേദ്യം എന്നും തനിക്ക് കിട്ടണം എന്നും പറഞ്ഞു, അത് തന്നുകൊള്ളാം എന്ന് അമ്മയും പറഞ്ഞു, ഈ ഇല്ലം സർപ്പദോഷ നിവർത്തിക്കായി കേൾവി കേൾക്കുമെന്നും അനപത്യതാ ദുഃഖം അനുഭവിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് ഒരു ആശ്രയ സ്ഥാനം ആയിരിക്കും എന്നും തന്നെ ആശ്രയിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് എന്നും തന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കുമെന്നും അരുളിചെയ്ത് നാഗം ഇല്ലത്തിന്റെ വടക്കിനിയിൽ ഉള്ള ഒരു ശിലയിൽ അന്തർദ്ധാനം ചെയ്തു എന്നുമാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം.
സർപ്പദോഷത്താൽ പല വിധത്തിലുള്ള ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന നാനാ ജാതി മത വിഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ പെട്ട ആൾക്കാർ വളരെ പണ്ടുകാലം മുതൽക്കെ തന്നെ ഇവിടെ ദർശനത്തിനായി വരാറുണ്ട്
