Valiya Kalavoor Sree Krishna Swami Temple – Festival

Valiya Kalavoor Sree Krishna Swami Temple is located at Pathirappally, Kalavoor in Alappuzha district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Bhagavan Sri Krishna. The annual Gokulashtami or Sri Krishna Janmashtami jayanti festival is held with various pujas and rituals. Ashtami Rohini ghoshayathra, feast, young children as baby Krishnas, children and boys dressed as Radha and Krishna, uriyadi and other festivities are part of the important Krishna temple festival observed in Chingamasam (August – September).

The temple has beautiful vatta sreekovil, kodimaram or dwajasthambam and namaskara mandapam. There are shrines of upa devatas here. The pond in the temple is famous for its lotus and water lilies in the region. There are also huge trees including banyan trees in the premises.

The shrine observes various Vaishnava pujas and rituals including abhishekam and various archanas. Vishu, Ramayana Masam and Thiruvonam are observed in the shrine. Ekadashi is of significance in the temple.

The annual festival in the temple coincides with Makara Samkramana. The festival begins with kodiyettam and concludes with arattu. The festival is famous for the participation of caparisoned elephants, melam, procession, music and performing art forms of Kerala.
