Patan Char Narayan Temple – Lalitpur Nepal

Patan Char Narayan temple is located at Durbar square at Lalitpur (present name of Patan) in Nepal. The shrine is dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu. It is one of the oldest temples in the Durbar square and dates back to 1566 CE.

In the sanctum sanctorum four different manifestations of Bhagavan Vishnu are carved on a lingam. The four forms are:

  1. Sankarshana on the east side holds a pestle and plow
  2. Vasudeva on the south side holds a club and wheel
  3. Pradyumna on the west side holds a bow and arrow
  4. Aniruddha on the north side holds a sword and shield

The temple was completely destroyed during the 2015 earthquake. The shrine was restored using material salvaged from the site.

The temple is noted for its wooden sculptures, lion figures and intricate carvings. There are sculptures of Garuda, Kuber and Yama in the shrine.
