Peruvanam Mahadeva temple is located at Peruvanam in Thrissur district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Shiva – Mahadeva and is one among the 108 Shiva temples in Kerala. The annual Peruvanam pooram is famous throughout Kerala. Mahashivratri is another important festival here.
Three Shivlings are worshipped in the temple in two separate sanctum sanctorum or sreekovil.
The main sreekovil is known as Irattayappan as two Shivlings are worshipped here. The main Shivling is 2 feet high and the second Shivling is 0.5 feet high. Both the Shivlings are worshipped on the same peedam or pedestal. The sreekovil faces west. The Goddess Parvati shrine here faces east.
There are different sankalpams regarding Irattayappan. Some consider the deity to be Sankaranarayana (Shiva and Vishnu together). There are others who worship him as Ardhanareeswara (embodiment of Shiva and Parvathi in one single form) and yet others to whom He is Umamaheswara (Shiva with his consort Goddess Parvati).
Madattilappan sreekovil has a Shivling on a high platform. The sanctum sanctorum here is three storied. This type of chatura sreekovil is known as ‘tritala prasaadam’. This type of sreekovil is very rare. It is believed that this is the tallest sreekovil in South India. One has to climb more than two steps to have darshan of this Shivling. There is a huge Shivling here at the back of a Mukha Mandapam (hall). The sankalpam here is of meditating Shiva.
The murti of Sage Pooru who founded the temple is located on the south west corner of the inner courtyard (Chuttambalam). After getting down the stairs of Madatthilappan we pay obeisance to the sage.
Peruvanam Mahadeva Temple History - Story
Peruvanam Gramam was one of the 64 Gramams or hamlet found by Parashurama Avatar of Vishnu after reclaiming the land of Kerala from the sea. Four Sastha temples at Akmala, Kuthiran, Edathiruthy and Oozath are located on the boundaries of Peruvanam Gramam and Thiruvullakkavu Sastha Temple is located at the centre of the Gramam. Irattayappan is the ‘Grama Adhipathi’ (King) and Thiruvullakkavu Sastha is considered the ‘Grama Rakshakan’ (protector).
It is said that the temple was founded by Pooru Maharshi, King Yayati of Hastinapura. Pooru Rishi who was looking for an ideal spot to perform Tapas (intense meditation) found the place where the present Peruvanam temple is located to be ideal. The place was then known as Pooru Vanam or forest. He performed intense penance here. He is believed to have had darshan of Mahadeva here.
Another legend has it that Pooru Rishi was traveling around the world with a Shivling that he had discovered in a lake in Badarinath. When he was traveling through the Peruvanam area the Shivling got stuck on the branch of a tree. This Shivling was consecrated at the Madathilappan temple. Yet another legend is that the Rishi worshipped the Shivling atop a tree branch.
In ancient times the administration of the temple was headed by Yoga Thiripadi who was elected by Peruvanam Namboothiri yogam. When the last Yogathiripadi died in the 18th century CE, the temple administration was given to Kochi kingdom. The Ootu of the temple was carried out by Paravur kingdom. But when Paravur kingdom merged with Travancore in 1764 CE, the Travancore king claimed the administration over the temple. The temple for a period was under the control of the Travancore kingdom. A peace treaty was signed between Kochi kingdom and Travancore kingdom and as a result, the temple came under the control of Kochi kingdom. The connected between Travancore kingdom and the temple exists even today. Maharaja of Travancore bears the expenses for Utcha Pooja, Pradhosha Nivedyam, Nira Puthiri and Koothu in the temple.
The Upa Devatas worshipped in the temple are Ganapathy, Bilva tree, Dakshinamoorthy, a second Ganapathy (with his trunk twisted right), Manikantan (Ayyappa or Sastha) and Rakteshwari (Goddess Bhadrakali). There is a shrine, of Gosala Krishna, outside the main structure (Chuttambalam) of Irattayappan on the north side.
The important festivals and rituals in the temple include Bhagvatha Sapthaham, Illam Nira, Ramayana Masam, Koothu, Laksharchna, Pratishta Dinam, the famous Peruvanam Pooram, Shivratri, Thiruvathira and Uthradam oottu. The entire temple is lit with lamps on the Diwali day. Pradosham falling on every fortnight in a Malayalam month is of great importance.
The temple is spread in an area of approximately 6.5 Acres and at present the maintenance is vested with Archaeological Survey of India.

- പരശുരാമന്റെ ഐതിഹ്യവുമായി ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ബന്ധം കാണുന്നു. പരശുരാമൻ കേരളത്തെ 64 ഗ്രാമങ്ങളായി വിഭജിച്ചതിൽ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഗ്രാമം ആയിരുന്നു പെരുവനം എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
- വേദത്തിന്റെയും സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെയും കേദാരമായ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം യതിവര്യനായ പുരു മഹർഷിയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
- പുരു മഹർഷിയുടെ തപസ്സുകൊണ്ടു ധന്യമായ വനം പുരുവനം എന്നും കാലക്രമേണ പെരുവനം എന്ന പേരിലും പ്രസിദ്ധമായിത്തീർന്നത്രേ. പെരുമാൻ കുടികൊണ്ട സ്ഥലം പെരുമനം എന്ന് മറ്റൊരു വ്യാഖ്യാനമുണ്ടു.
- കേരളത്തിലേക്ക് വരാൻ സന്നദ്ധരായ ബ്രാഹ്മണർ അവരുടെ ആവാസകേന്ദ്രത്തിലെ ശിവസാന്നിദ്ധ്യം അഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചു. ശിവൻ പാർവതിസമേതനായി പെരുവനത്തു സന്നിഹിതനായതിന്റെ കാരണം അതാണത്രെ.
- പത്ത് ഏക്കറിൽ കുറയാത്ത വിസ്തീർണമുള്ള മതിൽക്കകം മതിൽ കെട്ടി സംരക്ഷിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. കിഴക്കുദിശ ഒഴിച്ച് മൂന്ന് ദിക്കിലും ഗോപുരങ്ങളുണ്ട്. കിഴക്കുഭാഗത്ത് ഗോപുരത്തറ മാത്രമേ കാണുന്നുള്ളു. അഗ്നിക്കിരയായതെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
- പെരുവനത്തെ ഉപാസനാമൂർത്തി ഇരട്ടയപ്പനാണ്. ശിവന്റെ ദ്വൈത ഭാവമാണിവിടെ കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നത്. പീഠത്തിൽ വലിയ ശിവലിംഗം, അടുത്തത് ചെറിയത് മറ്റൊന്നും. ഇരട്ടയപ്പ സങ്കല്പം ഈ രണ്ട് പ്രതിഷ്ഠകളേയും കണക്കിലെടുത്താൺ. ശിവലിംഗത്തിൻ ആറടിയോളം ഉയരമുണ്ട്.
- മാടത്തിലപ്പൻ, ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തി, ശ്രീപാർവതി, പുരുമഹർഷി, ഗണപതി, രക്തേശ്വരി, അയ്യപ്പൻ എന്നീ പ്രതിഷ്ഠകളും ഉണ്ടിവിടെ.
- മേടമാസം പുണർതം നാളാണ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠാദിനമായി ആചരിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ശിവരാത്രി ആഘോഷപൂർവം നടന്നുവരുന്നു. ആറാട്ടുപുഴപൂരത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് നടക്കുന്ന പെരുവനത്തെ പൂരം പ്രസിദ്ധമാണെങ്കിലും അത് യഥാർഥത്തിൽ പെരുവനത്തപ്പൻറെ ഉത്സവമല്ല. ഭഗവാനെ കണ്ട് വണങ്ങിപ്പോകാൻ പെരുവനം ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ ദേവിദേവന്മാർ എത്തുന്ന ചടങ്ങുമാത്രമാണ്‌. എന്നാൽ പണ്ട് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ 28 ദിവസത്തെ ഉത്സവം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. അന്ന് 108 ദേവിദേവന്മാർ പങ്കെടുത്തതായും പറയുന്നു.
