Pookkattiyoor Mahadeva Temple – Festival

Pookkattiyoor Mahadeva Temple is located at Pookkattiri in Malappuram district, Kerala. This is a beautiful temple with wonderful architecture. The shrine is dedicated to Shiva – Mahadevar. The annual Mahashivratri festival is the most important festival in the temple.

The temple has a three tier square sanctum sanctorum – chathura sreekovil. The Nalambalam is specially noted for its two tier structure and wooden carvings. The temple has a pond and shrines of Upa Devatas.

The annual festival is famous for Kala Vela – huge effigies of ox are pulled to the temple on the occasion.

The annual festival is also famous for various pujas, Ganapati homam, mrityunjaya homam, udayasthamana pooja, niramala, abhishekams and homams. Temple art forms, tableau, floats, procession and melam are part of the annual festival.

The shrine also observes Ramayana Masam, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Mandala Kalam, Thrikarthika and Thiruvathira in Dhanu Masam.
