Vattenad Thiruvanippuram Shiva Temple – Festival

Vattenad Thiruvanippuram Shiva temple is located at Vattenad in Palakkad district, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Shiva – Mahadeva. The annual Shivratri festival held in February or March (Malayalam Kumbha Masam) is the important festival in the temple.

This is a small temple with a chathura sreekovil - two tier sanctum sanctorum. Shivling is worshipped in the shrine. Shiva here is Rudra murti. The sankalpam is that of Shiva who has just heard about the death of Goddess Sati and is about destroy the Daksha Yagna.

There is a chuttambalam, temple pond,  namaskara mandapam and shrines of upa devatas. The Upa Devatas are Ganapathi and Ayyappa. The Bhagavathi here is in Vana Durga form and her shrine does not have a roof.

Apart from the special pujas and rituals, the festival is also famous for procession, melam, annadanam, and traditional temple folk art forms.

Thiruvathira in Dhanu Masam is of importance in the temple.

The sreekovil of the temple is noted for its wooden sculptures. 

The annual Prathishta Dinam is held on Revathi nakshatra in Makara Masam.

Thrikala puja is held in the entire Karkidaka Masam. Ramayana is read in the entire month. There is also special pujas and rituals during Navratri including Ezhuthiniruthal. Bhagavatha Sapthaha yajnam is held in Vrischika Masam.
