Madavoorpara Shiva Temple – Shivratri Festival

Madavoorpara Shiva temple is located near Kattaikonam in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. This is an 8th century CE rock cut cave temple dedicated to Shiva – Mahadeva. The annual Shivratri festival (last week of February or first fortnight of March is an important occasion at Madavoorpara cave temple.

Morning darshan timings are from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM
Evening darshan timings are from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM

Madavoorpara Shiva temple is a rare rock cut Shiva temple in Kerala. All the aspects of the shrine are sculpted on the rock, even the steep steps leading up to the temple. Sculptures of temple doorkeepers are etched onto the rock on either side. A Shivling is worshipped in the temple.

The temple is facing southwest and has an oblong shrine with a rock-cut Shivling, an Ardha Mandapa and a pillared facade. A figure of Ganapathy is etched on the left wall of the Ardha Mandapa.

Various pujas and rituals including abhishekam, homam, mantras, pushpanjali and rituals offered to Rudra are performed on the occasion of Shivratri.
