Kochi Ambalamedu Kuladevata Temple – Pratishtha Festival

Kochi Ambalamedu Kuladevata temple is located at Ambalamedu in Kochi, Kerala. The shrine belongs to the Gauda Saraswat Brahmins. Eight Kuladevatas of the community are worshipped in the temple complex. The annual Pratishta Dinam (Pratishta Vardhanti or Anniversary) in the temple is held in Kumbha Masam (February – March).

The eight deities worshipped in the temple are

  1. Sri Maha Ganapathi
  2. Sri Lakshmi Narayana-Mahamaya-Aryadurga-Navadurga- Shantadurga-Katyayani-Narasimha
  3. Sri Damodar
  4. Sri Ramnath Shanteri Kamakshi
  5. Sri Mahalasa Narayani
  6. Sri Mahalakshmi
  7. Sri Nagesh-Baneshwar
  8. Sri Devaki Krishna-Ravalnath

The murtis of all the deities are carved out of Krishna Shila (Black granite).

Ganesh Chaturthi, Maha Shivaratri, Navratri, Deepavali and Sri Krishna Jayanti are the other important festivals observed in the temple.

The temples in the complex are afusion of different schools of architecture: a blend of North Indian and South Indian shades of temple craft found in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the Gothic style brought in by the colonialists and the facade of Jain and Buddhist Viharas.

The pagoda of Devaki Krishna Temple is the tallest at 16 meters above the ground level. and the next is that of Maha Ganapati temple at 14 meters. The basements are designed as cellars and there is a Pradakshin path for circumambulation of the deities.

The shrine maintains a beautiful garden with Tulsi, Athi (Ficus-Racemosa), Ithi (Ficus-Benjamina), Arayal (Ficus-Religious), Peraal (Ficus-Bengalensis), Ashoka, Champakam, Parijatham, Elanji, etc

Dwarapalakas as mentioned in scriptures, viz. Gopakumara, Pushti, Thrishti, Nandi, Shringi, Jaya-Vijayas are part of the temple complex. There is a special enclosure for Navagrahas as well.

A samooha Satyanarayana Pooja is being conducted at Sree Kula Devata Mandir for the welfare of all families and Kulavis. It starts at 10:00 AM on the last Sunday of every month.
