Chotty Mahadeva Temple – Festival

Chotty Mahadeva temple is located at Chotti near Mundakayam in Kottayam district, Kerala. The annual Shivratri festival in (last week of February or March first fortnight) is famous for Kavadiyattam and is known as Chotty Kavadi. The temple is dedicated to Shiva – Mahadeva. The shrine is famous for the annual Pitru Tarpanam ritual on Karkidaka Vavu Bali day.

A Shivling is worshipped in the chathura sreekovil. The shrine has a chuttambalam, flag mast or kodimaram and namaskara mandapam. There are separate shrines for Upa Devatas and also a grove for snake worship.

The Upa Devatas worshipped in the temple include Ganapathy, Goddess Parvati, Sri Krishna and Nagas in a special kavu.

The annual festival is observed with Tantric pujas, homams, abhishekam and other rituals associated with Shiva temples. Floats, colorful kavadi, melam, people dressed as various characters from Hindu scriptures, caparisoned elephant, ezhunnallathu and Kerala temple art forms are part of the festival.

Mondays, Saturdays, Pradosham, Ramayana Masam, Thrikarthika and Thiruvathira are of great importance in the temple.

Vinayaka Chaturthi is observed in the temple in Chingamasam with various pujas and rituals.
