Kodumbu Kalyana Subramanya Temple is located at Kodumbu village and is around 5 kilometers from Palakkad in Kerala. Kodumbu Kalyana Subramanya Temple Thaipooyam festival 2025 date is February 11. Kodumbu Kalyana Subramanya temple Skanda Sashti – Soorasamharam date is November 7, 2024.
The temple is locally known as Pazhani of Kerala. Thiruppugazh Arunagirinathar has stated that Kodumbu is half of Pazhani.
The Ratharohanam is held on Thaipooyam day.
Kodumbu Kalyana Subramanya Temple Festivals
The annual festival in the temple is known as Kodumbu Ratholsavam and is observed 10 days starting on the Bharani Nakshatra on Makaram month. The last three day of the festival is famous for chariot procession. The deities sit on beautiful carved chariots with elaborate decorations and they are pulled through the streets by devotees. The festival concludes on the Thaipooyam day.
Another popular festival observed in the temple is the Soorasamharam on Shukla Paksha Sashti in Malayalam month of Thulam (October-November). The festival starts on the day after Amavasya and ends on the famous Skanda Sashti day. On the day, the ritual enacting the fight between Lord Subrahmanian with the demons starts in the evening and lasts for three hours. Huge effigies of the demons Aana Mahaa Sooran, Singa Mughan, Banu Gopan and Soorapadman are carried by devotees. Murtis of Lord Veera Bahu and Lord Bala Subramanya and Lord Kalyana Subrahmanian are carried in separate chariots.
The main murti worshipped in the temple is Subramanya or Murugan along with his spouses Valli and Devayani.
The Upa Devatas worshipped in the temple are 4 Ganapathis, Shiva, Parvati, Veerabahu, Ayyappan, Nagarajavu, Chandikeshwara, Nandi, Mooshikan, Bhairavan and Mayil Vahanam.
Shiva has great importance in the temple and his puja is performed by Kerala Namboothiris.
The Sreekovil of the temple faces east. The pujaris of the temple are Tamil Gurukkal.
The main offering to the deity is Panchamrutha Abhishekam.
Mahamaham is observed once in twelve years on the Makam Nakshatra in Kumbham month and it is dedicated to Shiva.
Navratri is another important festival here.
The temple belonged to Muthaliyal village earlier.
Story Of Kodumbu Kalyana Subramanya Temple
The murti of Subramanya worshipped in the temple was miraculously discovered by a group of Tamil merchants who had settled in Kodumbu. Once when the merchants were going to sell clothes in a nearby town they heard a voice from a bush near Kozhi Mampatti village. The voice told the merchants that I too want to come. The merchants were not able to locate the source of the voice.
After a few days when they were passing through the same spot, they heard the voice again. This time they found the voice emanating from the murti of Subrahmanya along with Valli and Devayani in a ditch.
The merchants piously took the murti and kept it on the back of their bullock. But suddenly bullock disappeared. Perplexed and confused, the merchants returned back to their home only to find the bullock standing with the murti in front of their house.
They started worshipping the murti and soon the merchants got peace and prosperity.
After few years they decided to built a temple for the murti. The local ruler of the place Kuroor Mana Namboodiripad gave them a spot inside a Shiva temple and the temple was built.
Tamil Agama Puja And Kerala Temple Puja
When the Subramanya temple was built there was a confusion regarding the kind of puja to be performed. The priests of the already existing Shiva temple insisted the puja should be performed as per Agama followed in Kerala but the Tamil merchants did not accept this.
Kuroor Mana Namboodiripad asked the priests and merchants each to keep a kumbha on the northern gate of the temple. He then asked the priests to lift up the kumbha kept by the merchants and the asked the merchants to lift up the kumbha pot kept by the priests.
The priests were unable to lift up the kumbha. But Manikka Vachakar, the great Shiva devotee, who represented the merchants easily lifted the pot kept by the priests.
So it was decided the puja in Subramanya Temple would be according to Tamil Agama and that of the Shiva temple will be as per Kerala tradition.
