Velappaya Shiva Temple – Information – Two Shiva Temples

Velappaya Shiva temple is located at Velappaya in Thrissur town, Kerala. The main deity worshipped in the temple is Shiva. There are two murtis of Shiva in the shrine.

The murti worshipped in the thekke sreekovil (south sanctum) is swayambhu Shiva in the form of shivling. The darshanam of this vatta sreekovil (circular sanctum) is towards west. On the east side of this sreekovil Goddess Parvati is worshipped and She faces east. Ganapathi is also worshipped here and He faces west.

The murti worshipped in the vadakke sreekovil (north sanctum) is Keerata Murti. The darshanam of this chatura sreekovil (squaare sanctum) is towards west.

A devotee should first have darshan at thekke sreekovil. The first puja in the morning is performed at the south sanctum.

The first puja in the evening is performed at the north sanctum.

Apart from Ganapathy and Goddess Parvati, the other murtis worshipped in the temple are Ayyappan, Nagaraja and Nagakanyaka.

The annual festival is held on the day after 41 days of Mandala Kalam (last week of December).

Mahashivratri is another important festival.

An inscription in the temple states that the shrine was given to the Kochi king.
