Machattu Thiruvanikavu temple is located at Thekkumkara near Wadakkanchery in Thrissur district, Kerala. The temple is famous as Machattu Thiruvanikavu and the main deity worshipped in the temple is Goddess Bhadrakali. The annual five-day festival is held on the second Tuesday of February (Kumbha Masam). The festival is famous as Machad Mamangam. The highlight of Machad Kuthira Vela or Thiruvanikkavu Kuthira vela is the arrival of effigies of horses from five desams.
The festival begins with the parayeduppu.
The festival is organised by five desams in a competitive way. The decorated effigies of horses are taken out in a grand procession to the accompaniment of Chenda Melam. The festival is famous for Poothan, Thira, Andi and Nayadi. Tholpavakoothu is another highlight of the festival.
- അഞ്ചു ദിവസത്തെ ഉത്സവത്തിന്റെ അവസാന നാളിൽ ഗംഭീരമായി അലങ്കരിച്ച കുതിരക്കോലങ്ങൾ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് എഴുന്നള്ളിക്കുന്നു. കുതിരവേലയുംചെണ്ടമേളവും കൂടിച്ചേരുമ്പോൾ മച്ചാട്ടുവേലയ്ക്ക് മാമാങ്കപ്പൊലിമ കിട്ടുന്നു.
- കുതിരകളിൽ ഒരേ ഒരു ആൺകുതിരയേ ഉള്ളൂ അത് മംഗലം അയ്യപ്പൻകാവ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ കുതിരയാണ്
- സാധാരണ വേലപൂരങ്ങളിലേതുപോലെ ആനയെഴുന്നള്ളിപ്പ് ഇവിടെയില്ല എന്നത് ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്.
- കുതിരക്കളി കഴിഞ്ഞ് സന്ധ്യയാവുന്നതോടെ തട്ടകദേശങ്ങളിലെ ഹരിജനങ്ങളുടെ ഊഴമാവുന്നു. അവർ പൂതൻ, തിറ, ആണ്ടി, നായാടിഎന്നിവയുമായി കാവുകേറുന്നതോടെ പകൽപൂരം അവസാനിക്കുന്നു.
- പിന്നീട് അഞ്ചുദിവസവും രാത്രിയിൽ ശ്രീരാമപട്ടാഭിഷേകം തോൽപ്പാവക്കൂത്ത്കൂത്തുമാടത്തിൽ അരങ്ങേറുന്നു. വേലകഴിഞ്ഞാണ് ഇവിടെ തോൽപ്പാവക്കൂത്ത് നടത്തുന്നത് എന്നതും ഒരു പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്.
- ഇവിടുത്തെ പറയെടുപ്പ് മറ്റുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലെ പറയെടുപ്പുകളിൽ നിന്നും വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്.
- മച്ചാട് ദേശത്ത്‌ ഈഴവ സമുദായത്തിന്റെ തണ്ടാൻ പദവി നൽകി ആദരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതു അച്ചിങ്ങര വീട്ടുകാരെയാണ്. മച്ചാട് മാമാങ്കത്തിന് ദേശത്തെ തണ്ടാൻ സ്ഥാനം വഹിക്കുന്നത് അച്ചിങ്ങരയിലെ മുതിർന്ന പുരുഷനാണ്.
The darshanam of Machattu Thiruvanikavu is towards west but prominence is given to the north side darshan.
The Upa Devata worshipped in the temple is Kshetrapalan.
As per history, Goddess Bhadrakali arrived here atop the olakkuda (traditional umbrella of Kongad Nair) from Kodungallur.
