Kappil Shiva Temple – Kappil Bhagavathy Temple

Kappil Shiva temple and Kappil Bhagavathy temple are located on the same premises at Kappil in Edava village in Kollam district, Kerala. The shrine is around 16 km from Chathanoor.

A Shivling is worshipped in Kappil Shiva temple and it faces west facing the sea. The Upa Devatas worshipped here are Sri Krishna Bhagavan along with Rukmini and Satyabhama, Nandi and Nagam. The temple is more than 2000 years old.

Goddess Bhadrakali is worshipped at Kappil Bhagavathy temple. The Upa Devatas worshipped here are Sastha and Ganapathi. The most important festival in the temple is held on Meena Bharani (Bharani nakshatra in March or April).

History has it that the first Shiva temple here was built more than 5000 years ago but sea had engulfed it. The temple is believed to be lying under the sea. The shrine was very rich and it seems it had a golden flagstaff (swarna kodimaram).
