Kamothu Bhagavathy Temple At Kumbalam – History – Broken Murti

Kamothu Bhagavathy temple is located at Panangattu in Kumbalam village in Ernakulam district, Kerala. The main deity worshiped in the temple is Goddess Bhagavathi. It is believed that Bhagavathi in the temple arrived from Arakutti.

This was the temple of the Desam or area. The main deity faces west. Mudiyettu which is popular in other Bhagavathy temple is not held here.

The Prathishta of Bhagavathy is that of a broken Shilakannadi (mirror in stone). The broken Shilakannadi has been restored (tightened) using a silver wire. It is said that the Vigraham in the temple cannot be changed and therefore the broken murti is worshipped.

The Upa Devatas worshipped in the temple are Shivan, Sasthavu, Rakshas, Yakshi and Sarpams. Arukola is worshipped outside the temple compound.

The most important festival in the temple is the Thalappoli utsavam on Ayiliyam nakshatra in Meenam month.
