Goddess Sri Kurumba Worshipped In North Kerala

Goddess Sri Kurumba is widely worshipped in North Kerala. She is a village goddess and is a manifestation of Mother Goddess Shakti. It is believe that the Goddess brings Vasuri or poxes. She also has the power to cure them. Sri Kurumba Bhagavathi is also known as Cheerumba and Cheerma.

The Goddess got the name as she provides coolness or chill to devotees.

As per many scholars and devotees, Sri Kurumba is the manifestation of Kodungallur Bhagavathy.

The Goddess is worshipped by communities like Thachanmar, Theeyar, Mukkuvar and Karimpalar. A ritual known as Kannikettu is observed by Karimpalar community.

The Sri Kurumba Bhagavathi is usually worshipped in a grove or kavukal. Annually special rituals like pattu utsavam is held in the sacred places associated with the goddess. The ritual is held on Bharani nakshatra day.

The most famous temples of Sri Kurumba Bhagavathi are located at Peelikkodu, Cheruvathur, Payyanur, Madayi and Koyonkara.
