Changalavattam Lamp in Kerala Temples

Changalavattam is a lamp widely used in Kerala temples. It is made using bronze. It is used during auspicious events associated with Hindu religion. The lamp has a long handle towards the back. There is a small dip (depression) in the middle for holding oil. In front adjoining the depression is the small depression to light the lamp or diya. A small spoon bound using chain is attached to the Changalavattam. This is a heavy lamp.

The lamp was part of many aristocratic families in the past – a royal sign.

The lamp is also now referred to as ashtamangalyam lamp.
