Chamunda Devi temple at upper terrace is one of the oldest temples in Chamba town in Himachal Pradesh. This wooden, pent roof temple is dedicated to the fierce manifestation of Mother Goddess Durga – Goddess Chamunda. The pillars and ceiling of temple are decorated with fine carvings of Shiva, Mahishasuramardini and lay images.
A grand, brass bell at the entrance has toiled the faith of devotees through the centuries, and innumerable smaller bells are strung along its right verandah, behind which the Ravi River meanders along its course from Bharmour. The bells are hung up in honor of Goddess Chamunda.
Behind main Chamunda Devi temple is a small Shiva Shrine. There are murtis of Hanuman and other deities in the temple compound under huge trees. There is also an open temple to Bhairav in the temple compound.
The temple wall has an intricately carved wooden representation of Surya, the sun god in Hinduism.
The temple is dated to the 11th century but the general belief is that it is much older than that.
The location of the temple offers majestic views of the Chamba town below and the mountains in the distance.
The temple is under the jurisdiction of the Archeological Survey of India (ASI).
