Six Fold Acts Of Saraswat Brahmins – Shat Karmas

Saraswat Brahmins trace their roots to Bhrigu Rishi. The group is as Saraswat, because after they descended from Kashmir, they settled down on the banks of Saraswati River. The area was from the source of Saraswati River to ‘Binshan Tirtha.’ Here are the six fold acts of Saraswat Brahmins or the Shat Karmas.

  1. Performing Yagnas as priests
  2. Conducting Yagnas as Yajaman for the welfare of all living beings in the universe
  3. Adhyayana – Learning and gathering knowledge for the welfare of all living beings
  4. Adhyapana or teaching – spreading knowledge and passing on knowledge to next generation
  5. Giving gifts – Dana – the most popular in Annadanam – helping the poor and nedy
  6. Prateegraha or accepting gifts however small it might be.
