Srisailam means eternal mount. It was earlier known as
Krauncha Mountain. Located in Andhra Pradesh in India, it is a divine spot for
Shaivites. Legend has it that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati appeared here as
Arjuna and Mallika, and hence this spot is called Sri Mallikarjuna.
The temple atop Srisailam is also known as Mallikarjuna Swamy
and is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples.
The mountain also has a Shakti Peeth of Mother Goddess
Shakti – She is worshipped here as Goddess Bhramaramba.
Two kilometers from Mallikarjuna Swamy is Patalganga, where
the Krishna River descends steeply.
There is a Ganapati shrine 2.5 kilometers ahead. It is customary
to visit the Ganapati Shrine and request Ganesha to bear witness to one’s visit
to the whole region.
Thousands of devotees gather here during the Shivaratri
Festival.
Srisailam is place of great importance from ancient times as
it finds mention in the writings of travelers like Fa-Hien and Hiuen Tsang.
