Story of Prayageshwar Mahadev

Sage Narad once happened to see a beautiful young woman near a lake on Shweta Island. Narada asked the woman what she was doing alone in the island. The woman asked sage Narada to close his eyes. When he did, he saw three divine men in the body of the woman.

Sage Narad then tried to use his powers to know more about the woman. But his powers had no effect on the woman.

Sage Narad then asked the woman who she was and why his powers are not working?

The woman said that she was Goddess Savitri who was an expert in the Vedas. She also told him to go to Prayagrajya where he will get back his knowledge and powers.

Sage Narada then reached the region of Badarinarayan. Here he met Swamybhu Manu Raja who directed him to worship a Shivling in Mahakal forest (present day Ujjain). Sage Narada was asked to worship the Shivilng here as Prayagraja.

Sage Narada did as directed and he got back his knowledge and powers.

This Shivling is today known as Prayageshwar Mahadev
