Gauri Devi is the form of Mother Goddess Shakti in which she performed intense tapas to get Mahadev Shiva as Her husband. She is worshipped for happy married life and for getting good husband or wife. Below is Goddess Gauri Puja vidhi or procedure along with mantra. This is a simple guide on how to perform Maa Gauri Devi Puja and is ideal for performing it at home.


When to Perform Goddess Gauri Puja?

The ideal day to perform the puja:
  • Tritiya Tithi – the third day of the waxing phase or waning phase of moon. Third day after full moon (purnima) or no moon day (Amavasya)
Legend has is that Goddess Gauri performed intense austerities to bring back Shiva into worldly life. Shiva had lost interest in worldly life after the death of Mata Sati. Gauri succeeded in Her mission and Shiva married her.

Benefits of Performing Gauri Devi Puja

  • As per Bhavishya Purana, those performing the puja will be blessed with wealth, peace, prosperity, beauty, long life and luck.
  • Those people donating jaggery or salt will be blessed with auspiciousness.
  • Feeding animals and poor people on the day will help in restoring health.
  • There will be no physical accidents.
  • All problems in married life will be solved.

Simple Goddess Gauri Puja Vidhi

  • The puja should be performed early morning after sunrise or during the pradosh period (1.5 hours before sunset).
  • The murti (picture, photo or painting) of Goddess Gauri along with Shiva should be worshipped.
  • The puja should be performed facing north.
  • The person performing puja should wear green color clothes.
  • A brass lamp should be used. The lamp should be lit using mustard oil (sarson-ka-tel). One wick is preferred.
  • Yellow color flowers should be offered.
  • Sandalwood oil should be offered. (If not available chandan should be offered)
  • Laddoo is the preferred bhog or Prasad or naivedya on the day. It should be later shared with family members.
  • The mantra ह्रीं गौर्ये नमः॥ should be chanted 108 times. The count should be kept on any mala.

Special Pujas

  • To avoid accidents and fear of future accidents – donate jaggery to goshala or feed cow with jaggery.
  • For finding relief to marital problems donate yellow color cloth to a poor couple.
  • For early marriage, plant trees and take care of it.
