The annual temple festival at Kaloor Pavakkulam Sri
Mahadeva Temple near Ernakulam is observed in the Dhanu month as per traditional
Malayalam calendar followed in Kerala. The annual festival at Kaloor Pavakkulam Sri Mahadeva temple begins ten days before the Thiruvathira
nakshatra in Dhanu month. The festival ends on Thiruvathira nakshatra.
The annual festival is noted for special pujas, rituals, taking
the utsava murti of the main deity outside the temple and presentation of various
temple art forms of Kerala.
Special Utsava Bali to get the blessings of Upa Devathas and Parivaraprathishtas
are conducted on the eighth day.
The most important event during the ten day festival is the
pakalpooram, which is observed on the ninth day. The procession starts from
the Cherathrikkovil Sree Krishna Swamy temple.
Every year a Sunday during the festival is dedicated to
remembering famous Music Director Sri Raveendran Mash. His songs and
compositions are rendered throughout the day by famous and eminent musicians.
For three days during the festival Murajapa Homam is
conducted in the temple premises.
Pournami Pongala At Kaloor Pavakkulam Sri Mahadeva Temple
Pournami Pongala is observed on the pournami or the full
moon day in Medam month.
The festival is observed for eight days and ends on the full
moon day with Pongala.
The pongala ritual is offered to Mother Goddess Parvati
Devi. Thousands of women devotees perform this annual ritual for peace and prosperity.
Cultural programs, Thiruvathirakali and dance festival
(nrithyothsavam) are part of the eight day festival.
Other important festivals observed in the shrine include
Shivratri, Ramayana Masam, Karkidaka Vavu Bali and Navratri.
The annual prathishta dinam observed on the third day of Midhunam
month is famous for Shiva Purana Sameeksha. It begins ten days before the annual
prathishta dinam and concludes on the Prathishta dinam. Maharudram, special pujas
to the Shivling and Nandi are part of the annual prathishta dinam festival.
Kaloor Pavakkulam Sri Mahadeva Temple
Main Deity – Shiva in the form of Shivling and Swayamvara
Parvathi Devi.
Shiva worshipped in the temple is the amsham of Nataraja
performing Tandava Dance. The main deity faces east and Nandi lies in front of
him.
Swayamvara Parvathi Devi is found behind Shiva Lingam as she
is pacifying Lord Shiva who is in an anger. She faces west.
Another murti of Goddess Parvati found in the inner sanctum
holds a garland in her right hand. As she is courting Shiva, it is believed
that those wishing to get married early will be able to get their desire
fulfilled.
A lamp kept behind Shivling is light as part of offering by
devotees. This helps in solving all problems related to marriage and
relationships.
