Yamai Devi – About Goddess Yamai Mata

Goddess Yamai Devi is a manifestation of Mother Goddess Durga and in this form she is widely worshipped in Maharashtra. ‘Ye Mai’ in marathi means ‘come mother’. Yamai Mata is also known as Mahishasur Mardini Yamai.

Popular temples dedicated to Yamai Devi are located at Aundh near Satara and at Rashin near Ahmednagar in Maharashtra.

Legend has it that Goddess Lakshmi of Kolhapur and Lord Jyotiba invited her by calling ‘Ye Mai.’ She thus came to the region and was called Yamai Devi.

Yamai Devi is the family deity or Kul devata of many families in Maharashtra.
