Goddess Yamai Devi is a manifestation of Mother Goddess
Durga and in this form she is widely worshipped in Maharashtra .
‘Ye Mai’ in marathi means ‘come mother’. Yamai Mata is also known as Mahishasur
Mardini Yamai.
Popular temples dedicated to Yamai Devi are located at Aundh
near Satara and at Rashin near Ahmednagar in Maharashtra .
Legend has it that Goddess Lakshmi of Kolhapur and Lord
Jyotiba invited her by calling ‘Ye Mai.’ She thus came to the region and was
called Yamai Devi.
Yamai Devi is the family deity or Kul devata of many
families in Maharashtra .
