Story of origin of Bhutamata is found in the Bhavishya
Purana. Sri Krishna narrates the story. Legend has it that one day Goddess
Parvati was in conversation with Shiva. She was so involved in the conversation
that living beings on earth began to suffer as there was no one to nourish
them. Then suddenly a Goddess appeared from the body of Goddess Parvati and
this was Bhutamata.
She is today worshipped under numerous names.
You can find murtis of her in villages and towns under an
old tree. People regularly offer water, flowers, diya, and prasad.
It is believed that she blesses her devotees with children,
food, cattle, good health and protects children against diseases.
