Story of Hidimba Devi - Wife Of Bhima Of Mahabharata

Hidimbi, or Hidimba Devi, was a forest dweller and she was the first wife of Bhima of Mahabharata. Her brother, Hidimba was killed by Bhima, the second of the Pandava brothers. Hidimbi later married Bhima and they lived together for a year. In fact, Hidimbi was the first woman to be married into the Pandava clan. But she was never given this honor or recognition.

Hidimbi happily ruled the kingdom of her brother.

Hidimba and Bhima had a son named Ghatotkacha. When Ghatotkacha grew up, Hidimbi handed the kingdom to her son and retired deep into the forest to do penance.

The place where she meditated is in Himachal Pradesh and is today known as Dungri Temple. The popular belief is that the temple is located at the exact spot where she meditated.

In the region, Hidimba Devi is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. She is a powerful deity in the region and is the first deity to arrive in Kullu during Dasara celebrations.

It must be noted that here that Hidimba Devi was the first daughter in law in the family of Pandavas. Bhima was the first of Pandavas to get married.
