Bhadrapad Nag Panchami in North India – Puja of Snakes in Bhadrapad Month

Bhadrapad Nag Panchami in North India is observed on the Krishna Paksha Panchami – the fifth day during the waning or dark phase of moon in Bhadrapad Month. Pujas are offered on the day to black and blue-black snakes. Karkotaka Nag is offered worship on the day. Bhadrapad Nag Panchami 2024 date in North India is August 24.

As per Garuda Purana on all Nag Panchami days, five different forms of Nag drawings are made on the two sides of house and pujas are performed. The five nags are Karkodakan, Ananta, Elapatra, Kaliyan aur Dhritarashtra.

As per Skanda Purana worshipped the great serpents (mahanag) will help in all kinds of desire fulfillment.

Perform vrat and puja on Bhadrapada panchami will help in keeping out snakes bites in the family as per Narada Purana.

It is also believed that children will have long life as result of performing puja on Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha Panchami. Many childless couples have been blessed with children after performing puja on the day.

How to do Bhadrapad Nag Panchami Puja?

The puja is to be performed on the southwest corner of the house.

A nag mandal has to be created on black color cloth using haldi and thread. This procedure is mentioned below in Hindi.
कच्चे सूत को हल्दी चंदन से रंग कर सात गांठें लगाकर सूत के पांच सांप बनाकर "नाग मंडल" स्थापित कर विधिवत पूजा करें।
Light lamp using fragrant oil.

Agarbatti or dhoop should be of jasmine flowers.

Offer Roli and Akshat.

Offer pink color flowers.

Panchamrit made of milk, curd, ghee, sugar and honey should be offered to Nagas.
Offer aarti using camphor (karpur).

After this offer soaked bajra, ghee and jaggery.

Meditate for few minutes and chant the following mantra 108 times
नवकुलाय विद्द्हे विषदन्ताय धीमही तन्नो सर्प प्रचोदयात॥

All food items should be kept under a tree in deserted or forest area.

While doing puja, offer dried whole coriander (dhaniya) for professional success.
