Story of the birth of Shuka

Shuka was the son of Sage Vyasa. Story of the birth of Shuka is mentioned in the Mahabharata. Sage Vyasa was one day engaged in rubbing the sticks for making fire.

When the sage was engaged in producing fire for yajna, apsara Ghritachi appeared there. He was bewitched by the beauty of the heavenly maiden. He was smitten with desire.

Ghritachi then took the form of a parrot and came near the sage.

Vyasa tried to control his desire but he was unsuccessful. The seed came out from this body and fell into the sticks that were being rubbed for making fire.

From it was born Shuka deva or Suka.
