Story of Lokpaleshwar Mahadev form of Shiva in Ujjain
Legend has it that the demon army of Hiranyakashipu destroyed all the ashrams. They filled yajna kund with blood and meat. There was no place for people to pray.

Saints and Devas approached Vishnu to find a solution.

Vishnu asked them to go to Mahakaal Vana (present day Ujjain) and offer prayers to Shiva there.

Saints and Devas made a Shivling here and did intense penance and prayers. A huge fireball appeared from the Shivling and it destroyed the demon army. Peace returned to earth.

As the Shivling protected the world, it came to be known as Lokpaleshwar Mahadev.

Offering prayers here on the eight day of a fortnight (ashtami) is considered highly meritorious.
