Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is the largest and loftiest
temples among the shrines at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. This Shiva temple, built
during the 10th century, measures 30.5 meters in length and 20 meters in width excluding
the platform.
Facing the east, the temple consists of porch, hall, large
hall, oriel windows, vestibule and sanctum enclosed by ambulatory.
The shrine is famous for its sculptures they depict an animated
array of gods and goddesses, couples, heavenly damsels, mythical animals and
serpents. The lofty base of the temple has numerous and elegantly ornamented moldings,
which include two rows of processional friezes teeming with elephants and
horses, warriors and hunters, acrobats and musicians, dancers and devotees and
erotic sculptures.
