Story of Chavaneshwar Mahadev form of Shiva in Ujjain
Rishi Chyawan performed intense austerities on a riverbank
in a forest. He lost all count of time. His body was covered with mud. Anthill
grew all around him. Only visible part of his body was his eyes. Sukanya, the
daughter of King Shayathi, reached the spot one day.
She was fascinated by the two shining stones on the anthill.
It was actually the eyes of Rishi Chyawan.
Sukanya tried to remove it using a sharp twig. This blinded the
Rishi. He cursed the kingdom to face all sorts of adversities.
Soon the soldiers of the kingdom fell ill. There was
commotion all around.
King Shayathi went to Mahkaal Vana and performed intense
austerities. Shiva appeared before him and gave redemption. All the sins were
cleared and peace returned to the kingdom.
The Shivling to which the king offered prayers came to be
known as Chavaneshwar Mahadev.
