Story of Uttareshwar Mahadev of Shiva in Ujjain
Legend has it that once Indra could not control the rain
clouds. There was either flood or no rain on earth. People faced numerous
difficulties. Indra then sought the help of Shiva. Mahadev called the clouds of
the northern world. The king of clouds told that he had no control over his anger and he used burst out. Thus there was torrential rains. Shiva asked him to offer prayers to a Shivling in Mahakaal
Vana (present day Ujjain).
The king of clouds (Uttareshwar) did as told by Shiva and he
attained sanity. The clouds were then able to provide adequate rains on earth.
The Shivling that the king of clouds prayed to got the name Uttareshwar.
It is believed that one who offers prayer here will never face trouble from
natural calamities.
