Pandava Thoothar Perumal Temple in Kanchipuram – Pandava Thootha Perumal Temple

Pandava Thoothar Perumal Temple, also known as Thirupadagam, is a unique shrine dedicated to Bhagavan Sri Krishna in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. A 25 feet murti of Lord Krishna is found in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. The shrine is located opposite to the famous Ekambareswarar Temple in Kanchipuram.

The 25 feet murti of Bhagavan Sri Krishna faces east and it is in this form that he appeared before Janmajeya

Consort worshiped here is Satyabhama and Rukmini. The tirtha associated with the temple is Matsya Tirtha.

The present structure, which is in Dravidian style of architecture, is believed to be more than 1000 years old.


Sri Krishna is known as Pandava Tootha because he went to the court of Hastinapura as messenger of peace. However, Duryodhana insulted him and attempted to capture him. This led to Bhagavan Sri Krishna displaying his Virat Roopa or cosmic form.

Janmajeya ,the grandson of Pandavas, offered prayers to Narayana and had darshan of Bhagavan Sri Krishna in the Pandava Thoothar form.

It is said that circumambulating the temple by feet or by rolling in the temple would help in having a healthy body. This is because feet of Sri Krishna is touching the ground in Viswapada Yoga.

Another legend has it that Rohini Nakshatra, daughter of Daksha, worshipped Sri Krishna here to get Chandra, or moon god, as husband.

The temple is mentioned in the Divya Prabandham, early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD. It is also one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu.

The most important festival observed in the temple is the Sri Krishna Jayanti or Gokulashtami. Other important rituals and festivals are Diwali, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Panguni Uthiram and special ritual on Rohini Star Day in Kartigai Month.

Subsidiarty deities worshipped in the temple are Arulalaperumal, Emperumanaar, Chakrathalwar and Narasimha.

Worshipping in the temple on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Rohini Nakshatra day, Ashtami day of a fortnight are considered highly meritorious.
