Story of Dhanusahatreshwar Mahadev
Legend has it that there once lived a king named Vidurath.
During a hunting expedition, he happened to see a cave. A saint informed him
that a demon named Kumjam uses it to come out from the netherworld. The saint
asked the king to defeat the demon so that the area will be peaceful.
The king went back to his palace and informed his sons and ministers
about the cave. When they were discussing the matter, a saint came and informed
that demon Kumjam has kidnapped a girl from the area.
The king immediately asked his sons to attack and kill the
demon.
The huge army of the king was defeated by the demon. Two sons
of the king were taken prisoners.
The king did not know how to face the situation.
Suddenly Markandeya Rishi appeared in the palace and asked the
king to offer prayers to a Shivling located in Mahakaal forest (present day
Ujjain). The Rishi informed the king that after successful completion of his
prayers, he would be presented with a bow and arrow with which he can defeat the
powerful demon.
The king immediately went to Mahakaal forest and offered
prayers to the Shivling. On the third day, he was present with a bow and arrow.
The king then led an army against the demon and defeated him. The girl and the
princes were rescued
As the king got Dhanus, or bow, after offering prayers to
the Shivling, it came to be known as Dhanusahatreshwar Mahadev.
It is believed that offer prayers here will help in
defeating enemies. It is also believed that those who have darshan of the
Shivling will never suffer in hell.
