Jalpeshwar Mahadev Story
Legend has it that there once lived a king named Jalp. He
had five sons. The king decided to retire to forest and he therefore equally
distributed his kingdom among his five sons. The king then went to the forest
and started performing austerities.
One of the sons killed the other four and usurped the entire
kingdom.
When the king came to know about this, he was saddened. He
went to the ashram of Vasishta Rishi and asked for a solution to the he sins
that might have occurred due to this gruesome act.
Vasishta Rishi asked the king to go to Mahakal forest and
offer prayers to a Shivling located to the west of Kukuteshwar Mahadev.
The king did prayers and intense austerities here. Shiva
blessed the king and told him that he got redemption of sins. As a boon, the
king asked for moksha or liberation. As King Jalpa got liberation, the Shivling
came to be known as Jalpeshwar Mahadev.
It is said that whoever offers prayer to Jalpeshwar Mahadev
will be blessed with prosperity and good children who will never leave their
parents.
