Gangasagar Island is located at the confluence of Ganga River
and Bay of Bengal. Here is a detail information regarding how to reach
Gangasagar and Kapil Muni Ashram and Temple. The place attracts maximum crowd
during Makar Sankranti on January 14 and January 15 – Gangasagar Mela.
Gangasagar is 135 km away from Kolkata. The place is not
directly linked to Kolkata.
From Kolkata one has to board a Kakdwip-bound bus from
Esplanade in Kolkata to Harwood Point. It is three hour ride.
Get down at Harwood Point and cross the Muriganga River by
boat and reach Kachuberia. Boats from Harwood Point and Kachuberia are
available every hour.
From Kachuberia, a bus will take you to Gangasagar (30 kms)
within an hour.
Minibus and hired cars are available for the journey. It
would take five hours to reach the island from Kolkata.
Alternative Route –
Take a bus to Namkhana from Kolkata (105) kms.
From Namkhana, one should cross the Muriganga River on a
boat or launch to reach Chemaguri. From Chamaguri one can reach Gangasagar by
bus (10kms.)
Best time to visit is mid January during Gangasagar Mela.
