At Brahmpur Shiva Temple at Buxar, Bihar, Lord Shiva is
worshiped as Baba Brahmeshwar Nath. It is an ancient temple. It is believed
that Lord Brahma installed the Shivling in the shrine. The temple is mentioned
in many scriptures.
A unique aspect of the temple is that the main door faces
west.
It is believed that the Shivling was established here at the
same period when Shiva married Goddess Parvati.
A popular legend associated with the temple has that the
invader Ghazani tried to destroy the temple.
The people of the region warned
him that it would attract wrath of Shiva. Ghazani then said if Shiva was so
powerful let him change the door of the temple from east to west. Next day
morning when people arrived at the temple, they saw the door shifted from west
to east.
Shivratri is the most important festival observed here. The
month of Shravan attracts thousands of devotees from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
It is believed that prayers offered here will be fulfilled quickly.
