Located near the source of Godavari River, Trimbakeshwar
Temple is one among the 12 Jyotirling temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The
history of Trimbakeshwar Temple is associated with Sage Gautama. The story
begins with the sage committing a sin by accidentally killing a cow.
For redemption of sin, Sage Gautama performed intense
austerity to appease Shiva on Brahmagiri Hill at Trimbakeshwar. After several
years, Shiva was pleased with the devotion, piety and determination of Sage
Gautama. Shiva then appeared before Sage Gautama.
For redemption of sin, Shiva brought down Ganga River to the south of Vindhyas. Ganga River is known as Godavari as Sage Gautama brought it down.
