Trimbakeshwar Temple History – Story of Trimbakeshwar Temple

Located near the source of Godavari River, Trimbakeshwar Temple is one among the 12 Jyotirling temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The history of Trimbakeshwar Temple is associated with Sage Gautama. The story begins with the sage committing a sin by accidentally killing a cow.

For redemption of sin, Sage Gautama performed intense austerity to appease Shiva on Brahmagiri Hill at Trimbakeshwar. After several years, Shiva was pleased with the devotion, piety and determination of Sage Gautama. Shiva then appeared before Sage Gautama.

For redemption of sin, Shiva brought down Ganga River to the south of Vindhyas. Ganga River is known as Godavari as Sage Gautama brought it down.

A Shivling appeared at the place where Shiva appeared and blessed Sage Gautama.
