Chandradityeshwar Mahadev Story

Demon Shambarasur defeated the Devas and took over the heaven. All the devas went into hiding. Surya and Chandra also went into hiding. Surya and Chandra then performed intense austerities to please Vishnu.

Bhagvan Vishnu appeared before them and asked them to go to Ujjain and offer prayers to a Shivling that is located north of Ujjain Mahakaleshwar Temple.

He told them that the fire that will emanate from the Shivling will kill demon Shambarasur.

Chandra and Surya then offered prayers to the Shivling. In due course of time a fire emanated from the Shivling and it annihilated demon Shambarasur and his entire army. Thus Devas got back heaven due to the courage of Surya and Chandra

Then a voice in the heaven announced that the Shivling to which Chandra and Surya offered prayers will be henceforth known as Chandradityeshwar Mahadev.
