Haldi Mukhi – Why Goddess Durga is known as Haldi Mukhi?

Goddess Durga is known as Haldi Mukhi because of her turmeric yellow skin – the traditional skin tone or color of Goddess Durga in Bengal and eastern parts of India is turmeric yellow. Haldi means turmeric and mukhi means face.

Haldi or turmeric is widely used in the worship of Mother Goddess throughout India. The cleansing aspect of Haldi makes it the symbol of Mother Goddess. She is the one who is capable of cleaning all the sins. She purifies devotees who take refuge in her.

Goddess Subhadra, who is worshipped in the Puri Jagannath temple, is also referred as Haldi Mukhi.
