In Hindu astrology, the concept of the Yama Grahas refers to the influence of the nine planetary deities over the 12 hours of daylight. Each of these planets, except for Ketu, is believed to exert control over specific time periods from sunrise to sunset. These time periods are crucial in determining the auspicious and inauspicious moments for various activities throughout the day.

The Yama Graha planets are as follows:

  1. Sun (Ravi or Surya): Representing vitality and leadership, the Sun is a central figure in Hindu astrology, signifying power and authority.
  2. Moon (Chandra): Governing emotions and the mind, the Moon influences our moods, intuition, and maternal instincts.
  3. Mars (Mangal): Known for its aggressive and assertive nature, Mars controls energy, courage, and passion.
  4. Mercury (Budha): Symbolizing intelligence and communication, Mercury governs reasoning, learning, and business activities.
  5. Jupiter (Guru): Representing wisdom and spirituality, Jupiter is associated with growth, prosperity, and education.
  6. Venus (Shukra): Governing love, beauty, and arts, Venus influences relationships, luxury, and creativity.
  7. Saturn (Shani): Known for discipline and challenges, Saturn controls aspects related to perseverance, hard work, and karma.
  8. Rahu: Although considered inauspicious, Rahu is associated with illusion, confusion, and desires. Its period of influence is critical and known as Rahu Kalam, considered an inauspicious time for starting new ventures.

Ketu: Though not one of the Yama Grahas, Ketu is still significant in astrology, representing detachment, spirituality, and karmic lessons.

Each planet controls a 90-minute period within the 12 hours of daylight, with the sequence starting from the time of sunrise. These periods are meticulously calculated and followed for various religious and daily activities to ensure they align with auspicious times, avoiding those influenced by malefic planets like Rahu and Shani.
