Tulsi Che Lagna is observed in the Kartik Month in Goa and Maharashtra . It is the marriage ceremony of the Tulsi
Plant and Bal Krishna – Little Sri Krishna (Bhagvan Vishnu). Tulsi Che Lagna
Festival 2025 date is November 2 (for those observing it on Kartik Shukla
Dwadashi). November 1 (for those observing it on Ekadasi). The festival is also
observed on Kartik Purnima (November 5, 2025). The festival is popularly
referred as Tulsi Puja or Tulsi Vivah.
The murti Krishna or Bhagvan
Vishnu is lavishly decorated and then carried to the place where the Tulsi
plant is grown, and there the marriage is ritually solemnized. The marriage
takes place with the chanting of holy hymns known as mangalashtakam.
Vishnu is also represented by a ‘jino badi’.
Sugarcane represents the best man (dhedo) and tamarind stalk
the bride’s maid (dhedhi).
The puja is performed by husband or wife.
After the puja and ritual ‘hari jagar’ – a mixture of puffed
rice (chirmulyo), sugarcane pieces, green tamarind pieces, pieces of ‘avale’
and coconut kernel – is distributed as Prasad to the people present at the
wedding.
It is one of the most important festivals in the Hindu religious calendar for no marriage ceremony can be held before the Tulsi Lagnas it is considered inauspicious.
The rituals also mark the end of Chaturmas, a four-month auspicious period.
