Baba Kaal Bhairav is a manifestation of Shiva worshipped in Varanasi . The popular
belief is that darshan at Kashi Vishwanath Temple
is incomplete with the permission of Baba Kaal Bhairav – it simply means that
one should first visit His shrine before visiting Kashi Vishwanath
Temple .
Baba Kaal Bhairav is also the guardian of Kashi – the kotwal
of Varanasi .
Legend has it that Baba Kaal Bhairav appeared from the third
eye of Shiva. He severed the arrogant fifth head of Brahma.
The local people believe that one needs the consent of the
deity to live in Kashi.
The most important temple dedicated to Shiva as Baba Kaal
Bhairav is located in Varanasi .
There are also many other big and small shrines dedicated to this manifestation
of Shiva in many places in North India .
