Sri Sena Nhavi – popularly known as Sant Sena Maharaj – was a barber by occupation. It is said that he was immersed in the worship of Lord Vitthal that one day he had acquired the wrath of a local king. To pacify the king and rescue Sri Sena Nhavi it is said that Lord Vitthal himself appeared.
Short Biography
Sant Sena Maharaj, also known as Sri Sena Nhavi, was a 14th-century Bhakti saint and poet-saint from Maharashtra. He was born into a humble family of barbers (Nhavi) and lived during a time when caste and social divisions were deeply entrenched in society. Despite his low-caste status, Sant Sena was a devout follower of Lord Vitthal (Vithoba) of Pandharpur.
One well-known episode from his life tells of a local king who summoned him for royal duties. However, Sena was so deeply engaged in devotional worship (bhakti) that he failed to respond. Angered, the king sent guards to bring him. Miraculously, Lord Vitthal himself is said to have appeared in Sena’s form, performed the royal duties, and saved his devotee. This divine intervention transformed Sena, who then fully devoted his life to the path of Bhakti.
He became part of the Varkari movement, alongside other great saints like Sant Dnyaneshwar, Sant Namdev, and Sant Tukaram.
