Dakor Mela, also known as Dakorji Mela, is a significant
religious event observed on Ashwin Purnima, which is the full moon day in the
Hindu month of Ashwin (September-October). This festival takes place in Dakor,
a town in the Kheda district of Gujarat, India, and it centers around the
revered Dakor Temple, dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna.
Significance of Ashwin Purnima
Ashwin Purnima holds a special place in the hearts of
devotees. It is believed that on this auspicious day, Lord Krishna,
affectionately known as Ranchodrai, arrived at Dakor. The legend states that an
ardent devotee of Lord Krishna, Bodana, brought the deity's idol from Dwarka to
Dakor. As a result, the Purnima is celebrated with great fervor, attracting
thousands of devotees who come to seek blessings and participate in the grand
celebrations.
Dakor Temple and Rituals
The Dakor Temple, also known as Ranchhodraiji Temple,
becomes a hub of activity during this time. The temple is beautifully
decorated, and various rituals and ceremonies are conducted. The festivities
include elaborate aartis (prayer rituals), bhajans (devotional songs), and
kirtans (chanting of hymns). Devotees engage in religious discourses and
partake in communal meals offered as prasad (consecrated food).
Fair and Festivities
Alongside the religious observances, a vibrant fair is held,
featuring a variety of stalls selling traditional foods, sweets, toys, clothes,
and religious items. Cultural programs, including folk dances, music
performances, and drama, are organized to entertain the visitors and showcase
the rich cultural heritage of Gujarat.
Phalgun Mela
Another significant mela at Dakor Temple is observed in the
month of Phalgun (February-March), following the festival of Holi. This mela is
equally grand and attracts a large number of devotees. It celebrates the divine
playfulness and colors associated with Lord Krishna, reflecting the joyous
spirit of Holi. Similar to the Ashwin Purnima celebrations, the Phalguna Mela
includes special rituals, aartis, and cultural events, making it a vibrant and
spiritually enriching experience for all participants.
Both the Ashwin Purnima and Phalgun Melas at Dakor Temple offer a unique blend of devotion, culture, and festivity. These events not only reinforce the spiritual bond between the devotees and Lord Krishna but also serve as important occasions for social and cultural exchange, bringing together people from different regions to celebrate their faith and heritage.
