Bipattarini Puja story is listened on the day of fasting. It
is highly meritorious to hear the Brata Katha. Goddess Bipattarini is one who
saves people from danger. Legend has it that Sage Narada one day reached the
banks of the River Karotowa. Here found many women observing prayer, puja and
fasting dedicated to Goddess Bipattarini. They wanted to know why the puja is
observed and how the goddess got the name.
Sage Narada then explains why Goddess Durga is also known as
Bipadtarini Maa.
During the Samudra Manthan, or churning of the ocean, by the
Devas and Asuras to get amrit (ambrosia), the fierce poison Kalakuta appeared.
It had the power to destroy the universe.
In order to save the universe, Shiva drank the poison
Kalakuta after meditating on Goddess Durga. Thus Shiva was able to save the
universe with the help of Mother Durga.
When Sri Krishna appeared in Vrindavan, it is said that he
wore an amulet of Goddess Durga. When ever Krishna
faced a danger he was able to overcome it with the help of Goddess Durga. Thus
he was able to defeat Serpent Kalia and numerous other demons.
As Goddess Durga saved people many times she got the name
Bipattarini.
Listening to this story on the Bipattarini Puja and performing
Annadanam or food donation is considered highly meritorious.
