Paramapada Ekadasi

Paramapada Ekadasi is observed mainly in temples in South India – especially at Tirumala Tirupati Balaji Temple, Sri Ranganatha Temple at Srirangam and in numerous other Vishnu Temples in South India. This Ekadasi is popularly known as Vaikunta Ekadasi and Mukkoti Ekadasi. In 2017, Paramapada Ekadasi is on December 29.

It is known as the Paramapada Ekadasi because on this day Paramapada Vaasal or the door to the Vaikunta in the sanctum sanctorum of Vishnu temple is open to devotees. This door is also known as ‘Vaikunta Dwaram’ or ‘Swargada Bagilu’ (the gate to the heaven).

Devotees are allowed to pass through the Vaikunta Dwaram on this day. Symbolically the door leads to Vaikunta – the abode of Srihari Vishnu.

This Ekadasi is known as Mukkoti Ekadasi at the Bhadrachalam Sri Rama Temple.
