Govardhan Hill, which was lifted by Lord Krishna to save the
people of Braj from heavy rains and flood created by Indra, is shrinking by the
size of a mustard seed daily. The huge hill which was believed to be nearly
30,000 meters high is today just 30 meters high. It is believed that by the end
of the Kali Yuga, Govardhan hill will vanish completely.
So why is Govardhan Hill is Shrinking? Legend has it that in
the Satya Yuga, Sage Pulastya had cursed the hill that it will reduce by the
size of mustard seed daily.
Sage Pulastya was residing in the holy city of Kashi and wanted to have a holy mountain that will match
the stature of Ganga
River . He then approaches
Dronachala, the king of mountains, and asks him for his son Govardhan.
Dronachala was reluctant to part with his favorite son. But
Govardhan agrees to accompany the Sage as he did not want his father to be
cursed.
Govardhan agrees to accompany the Sage but on the condition
that he should not be kept down. If he is kept down he will not then budge from
the place.
The Sage then carries the Govardhan Mountain
on his shoulders and reaches Braj. Govardhan is enamored by the beauty of the
place and decides to stay there.
To get his desire accomplished. Govardhan uses his divine
powers and makes the sage feel the need to answer the call of nature.
The sage is forced to keep the mountain down.
When the sage returns, he is unable to move the mountain.
Govardhan then reminds the sage the condition that he had set when they
embarked on the journey.
The sage uses his powers and realizes the trickery of
Govardhan. In anger, the sage curses Govardhan for cheating him. The sage
curses the hill to shrink by the size of mustard seed daily.
Govardhan Hill is located around 25 km west of Mathura .
Sri Krishna lifted a huge mountain to protect
the people of Braj but today that huge mountain is not there in Braj. Instead
all we have is a hillock which too is shrinking.
